The Dog Lady Blog

We've had almost five inches of rain in forty eight hours. It makes for lazy dogs, probably due to the barometric pressure being so low. It makes for a camper cleaning bonanza as I remain indoors. I took the dogs on a long walk earlier and then spent an hour towel drying their shaggy bodies afterward. My arms are limp. Now to attack the dust that has settled inside.

During our hike up our very steep drive today, we saw something so strange, so surreal, so never-seen-before: there was a "pack" of turtles coming up from the hollers where the creek was swelling out of it's banks, essentially flash flooding the lower laying areas of our land. I counted 11 turtles in all, moving in unison, almost scrambling, like a small army of deserters, right across my drive, ignoring me and the 35 dogs in my wake as they made their way on up the hill to high safe ground. I've seen a lot of nature's phenomenons but I've never seen turtles here in our woods like this: 1) banded together in such numbers and 2) moving so quickly, especially being t u r t l e s. Watching them and their determination was unique, amazing, charming, just a teeny bit eerie yet in the end remarkably poignant. Poignant turtles.
