NINE emails tonight asking: "what do you and your dogs do if a tornado rips over your hilltop?"  Well, first I check with the Sentry Hound who keeps a watch in the black horizon...

It's three minutes until 9pm, Wednesday, May 25, 2011. According to the hyperventilating weather reporters, "the storm's energy" won't be firing up until after sunset. That'll keeps things interesting: tornadoes at midnight.

Here's my Reckoning Bag--be it due to tornado, fire or rapture:

1. Cell phone FULLY charged,
2. Medications/4 bottles of water,
3. Two changes of clothing, et al,
4. ID/checkbook,
5. Granola bars,
6. Bag of treats for the dogs,
7. Flashlight.

I don't have a flashlight! I should have a flashlight!  Don't I need a flashlight, especially for the rapture?

As for a tornado, all I have to do is hear the tornado siren: immediately I call "Come on, Doggies! Let's go!"--and they do!  The hills and hollers are so steep here that we can simply burrow into the side of any of them and we're safe.

And then we'll ride the storm out.

I'll let you know if we're dead...


UPDATE: The Day After
May 26, 2011, noon

We made it through completely untouched but others weren't so lucky.  People always assume I'm more vulnerable to storms being so high up on a hilltop.  In fact, the topography seems to push most of the virulent weather right on by us.  It's something to do with all the trees, the hills and barometric pressure, which is low again today.  It's only then that the train tunnel down the Pike sounds like it's just around the corner. 

We're safe.  Damp, but safe.
