"...july 13 and it's only 73*f at 4pm: a meteorological gift!..."
I've been able to work in my garden all day. Weeding, staking, transplanting and feeding all throughout the morning, when the rain fell softly non-stop until 2pm (I swear, I think I could live in the northwest). I've got tiny little yellow squash that are so sweet and tender, I simply drop them in boiling water for a smidge and then drizzle with butter and sea salt. I've dug up the last of my tiny Dutch potatoes but still pick tangy spinach every day for my cheese sandwich. My bibb lettuce is crispy and I eat it with a bit of olive oil and Bragg's seasoning--it's heaven. Even my dogs love it, especially Thomas J. and while the blueberries and raspberries are favorites of the dogs too, the birds usually keep our bushes light on quantity.
Finally, the day is done and I can kick back and watch, "The Young and the Restless". I already took my bath and am dressed apporopriately for it: a "Mamaw" seersucker house coat (yellow and white), white socks (over coconut oil covered feet) and ladybug clogs.
Pretty. I actually feel kind of sore from the ravine hike we took in the rain this morning. We haven't done the 45* steep hills lately with the weather being so suffocating. So now a cup of tea, a few chewable baby aspirin and a fast mend. For dinner I'm having fried green tomatoes. Sherbet with berries for dessert.
Tillie (the woodland ambassador who comes to check on us from time to time--see video) is having the last of the date nut bread on our roof as I write. The hummingbird nectar is almost gone and I'm out of sugar. I have to run out to the market tomorrow anyway to get fresh water so my hummers will have fresh food by the afternoon. I've counted 18 of them so far. I'll try to get them on video gunrunning the feeders; they get very pissy with one another and fuss, squeak and zip around like big bees. I have to warn people
not to swat at them if they're on my porch because the birds are so used to me that they aren't afraid of people; they get
very close. A few years back I shot video of one hummingbird that would perch on my finger. It was the coolest.
