"...thomas j has always been loved..."

Most of the time, the backstory of the dogs I rescue gets lost in the day-to-day-drama-filled world of animal rescue.  Facts become convoluted, stories an amalgam of all the others.  So it's nice when I receive a note like this one.  Thomas J. is an odd, sweet creature who doesn't dig visitors; he and I are very similiar.  It's a tough world "out there"...

"Dear Katherine,

I attempted to post a reply to your April 1, 2011 blog regarding Thomas J. I suppose I have to have some other type of account to comment, I didn't know what I was doing, or both. Regardless, I want to share with you my attempted comment, about Thomas J. when I was his "safe-haven".

Below is my comment...

Hi.
I am the one other person besides you that Thomas J. trusted. I fostered him for months, during which time I was the only human that he would be close to. Originally I took him to "socialize" because he was afraid of everyone/everything. He was a small puppy. He fit right in with my little pack (three shelter rescues) and also my kitties. There is a long story between Thomas living with me and ending up with you, but I want to say that I so appreciate you and the home you have provided him with. I have followed your blog since Thomas left Owensboro and have started to comment many times but never did. Now, here I am. I gave him the name Thomas, after "Doubting Thomas" but mostly because it seemed to fit him. Oddly enough, I often called him Thomas J., although for me, he was Thomas Joseph. It also seemed to fit. I like the name Thomas "Jefferson" as well, and most of all, I like that he is safe and happy with you."

Thomas has been very happy here, Tracy, though it took him over a month to really attach himself to me. I can't ever adopt him out because he's still--and always will be--too skittish with strangers.  As a matter of fact, when anyone other than my friend, Grace visits, Thomas J. is in the tall grasses where he waits--woofing intermittently with impatience--for the "intruder" to leave.  Writing this now, Thomas
has his chin resting on my leg looking up at me with calm and confident eyes.  With me he feels safe and a safe Thomas J. is an endearingly affectionate and silly Thomas J!  It's safe to say that he and I have a deep, mutual love for one another and I will take care of him until the end.  I'm always very, very grateful to the rescuer before me, like Tracy with Thomas.  Thank you, Tracy.
